A girl begins to make the transition into womanhood when she trades the bows in her hair and play makeup for a straightener and real makeup. She starts to notice the way she looks. She has watched her mother all her life and is now able to be like her. She starts learning how to cook and take care of the house more. She begins to take on more responsibility for herself and others in the household: cooking meals, laundry, and schoolwork. As she makes this transition, she starts trying to find her place in this world; asking herself what she wants to do with her life.
