On the topic of the social clubs that Freed-Hardeman has put into place, there are definite advantages and disadvantages.
I believe there are many advantages to the social club aspect of college. Especially Freed-Hardeman. One of the advantages is that a person gets closer to a smaller group of people. If a person is not so overwhelmed with so many people he or she can develop better friendships. Another advantage is the social clubs are not like fraternities or sororities. The girls and the guys get to socialize together in the same group. The last advantage I will mention is the social clubs are not as competitive. They are there so the students can have fun and socialize and not be so worried about winning or losing.
Although there are many advantages to social clubs there are disadvantages to them as well. One of the disadvantages of the social clubs is the time spent with them. There are usually many events going on with the social club and if a person tries to go to every event, he or she would be neglecting school. Another disadvantage is with so many students and only five social clubs, there are bound to be at least one or two rather large groups. If a social club gets too large then the club will not be able to function very well. The last disadvantage I can think of is the social clubs competing against one another. Competition is good but it has to be tempered. If you are not careful the competition can get out of hand and then it is all about winning and not as much about having fun.
From the points stated above, it is easy to see that the advantages to having social clubs definitely outweigh the disadvantages.

Sasha you brought a few good points to the table about social clubs that I had not thought about. I agree with your statements about social clubs not being like fraternities and sororities. In the social clubs you get to know many people. I think that it is important to have mixed gender things on FHU’s campus. I also agree that social clubs are not taken as seriously as fraternities and sororities, we don’t really “pledge” to get into a social club here and we don’t break out in all out fights here even though some times I do think that the competition gets out of hand a people come away feeling angry. I also had not thought about the time social clubs take away from school time. As college students we already have enough trouble managing our time without being a part of extracurricular. But social clubs also do many good things as you mentioned.
I completely agree with you when it comes to social clubs allowing us to become good friends with a small group of people which will help us from being overwhelmed. It is good to get a solid group of friends set and then expand from there. Social clubs are are good way to get those strong close friends. I think that the competition between social clubs is actually a good thing. I think this because if causes the clubs to come together and work as a team to try to reach their full potential. I do agree that it can sometimes get out of hand, but over all I think that it is a good thing.
